FALL IN OCTOBER TOURISM EMPLOYMENT

Palma.—In October, 84,523 employees in the Balearics tourism sector were registered with social security. Figures from the national ministry for industry, trade and tourism indicate that the Balearics was one of only two regions of Spain where there was a fall in tourism employment. In the case of the Balearics it was by 0.5% (compared with October 2018). The Canaries experienced a much greater percentage decrease - 6.6%. Presenting the numbers, the secretary of state for tourism, Bel Oliver, said they demonstrated the strength of Spain’s tourism sector. “It has a maintained a good rhythm in terms of job creation beyond the summer period, despite the impact of the collapse of Thomas Cook.” This impact, she added, had been noted in the Balearics and the Canaries and would appear to explain the decreases. In the whole of Spain there were some 2.4 million people working in the tourism sector. These were three per cent more than October 2018 and represented 12.7% of all employees in the country.
